THE ISSUES
Overview
Poverty is a complex problem:
Hunger: 1 child dies every 5 seconds from hunger-related causes.
Unclean Water: 1 in 8 don't have access to safe water.
Limited Funds: 1 in 2 lives on less than $2 a day.
Lack of education: About 130 million 15-to-24 year-olds cannot read or write.
Injustice: There are more slaves today than during the 400 years of the trans-Atlantic slave trade
Disease: Together, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, killed nearly 4.6 million in 2007.
Inadequate Healthcare: Children with disabilities are outcasts from society because of the way they look, walk, or talk.
All of these issues interconnect, which means two things: 1) They all contribute to the complex problem of poverty. 2) Making a difference in one area can create change across the board!
Local Issues: In the US, 1 of every 6 children lives below the federal poverty line.
